Diabetes: An Insight

Diabetes: Too 'sweet' to handle!
For the past few years, there has been tremendous developments in the field of diabetic research. No doubt, the syndrome became immeasurably bothersome in the last decade and it became the need of the hour to delve deep into this issue in order to eradicate it completely.
Diabetes mellitus or simply diabetes is a syndrome which results from disordered metabolism. Due to the improper functioning of metabolism, the blood sugar level shoots up to an abnormally high degree resulting in a condition called hyperglycemia. Basically, when the body reduces the insulin production, it gets prone to diabetes as insulin is the hormone that keeps the blood sugar level to a manageable degree. Insulin is synthesised in the beta cells of pancreas. Precisely, diabetes millitus is a group of ailments that result in high glucose levels on account of defective insulin secretion or insulin action in the body.

Recent researches testify that the impact of diabetes could be unimaginably severe. Majority of diabetics belong to age group of 45 and 65 years. This definetely is the most productive age of human life. Diabetes turns out to be acute majorly because it is hard to spot its presence in the early stages. The symptoms of the disease is not that prominent.
Recently, at the launch of the Apollo clinic for diabetics, Dr Menaka Ramprasad said that impaired fasting glucose or the condition in which fasting blood glucose rises, is a  pre-diabetic state. This indication can be handy in addressing the disease at a much earlier stage.
Strange and shocking! Los Angeles is ranked 46th in diabetes deaths. The period between 2005 and 2007 saw a tremendous rise in diabetes cases. It has also been noticed that the county has a large number of obesity incidents which is again a prime reason of diabetes.

Understanding the ‘beats’ of human lifeline

The workings of the human heart are the profoundest mysteries of the universe. One moment they make us despair of our kind, and the next we see in them the reflection of the divine image. Charles W. Chestnut (1858-1899)

Pumping tirelessly day in and day out, our heart is definitely one of the unsolvable mysterious miracles. The rhythmic contractions and expansions help the organ pump blood through the blood vessels and keep the lifeline going on. It is a muscular organ that is responsible for the continuous supply of blood and consequently, transport oxygen throughout the body.

The right portion of the heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs, whereas, the left part receives blood from the lungs and supplies it to the rest of the body parts.

There are a number of factors that have an effect on the well working of your heart. Studies have confirmed that stress and depression shoot up the chances of heart failures. Over 5 million Americans carry a weak, unhealthy heart. Depression raises the risk of heart failure among these heart patients.

It has already been conformed that depression becomes almost three times more common after heart disease and depressed patients are more prone to get a second heart attack.

Diet that follow a Mediterranean pattern with plenty of fruits and fish are said to lower the risk of heart failure to a large extent.

A new and much optimistic research has revealed that a particular molecule called Thymosin beta-4 (TB4) produced by the heart during its embryonic development can be quite useful in encouraging new cell growth after a heart attack. It can also repair the heart cells.

Pacemakers are also being developed naturally. That certainly means that with the induction of a natural pacemaker there could be a permanent biological solution for the heart problems. Sinoatrial (SA), the body’s natural pacemaker gets generally damaged during heart attacks.

It has also been found that a person’s waist size is a reflection of the health of his heart. Larger waist circumference means greater risk of heart failure. So it’s better to keep oneself fit and fine by following a strict heart care regime i.e. regularly working the excess fat out and by keeping a watch on the day to day diet.

While it's easy to get overwhelmed, it's also simple to begin making a positive impact. Since it's helpful to understand the big picture when it comes to setting to smaller goals, we’ve adjusted our focus for this guide—a departure from out typical "how to go green" content, which typically tackles very specific topics such as kitchens, cars, or pets -- to take a broader look at the reasons behind why we should go green.- Slides

This study examined the association between trait depression and information-processing biases. Thirtyparticipants were divided into high- and low-trait depressive groups based on the median of their depressive subscale scores according to the Basic Personality Inventory. Information-processing biaseswere measured using a deployment-of-attention task (DOAT) and a recognition memory task (RMT). For the DOAT, participants saw one emotional face paired with a neutral face of the same person, and then were forced to choose on which face the color patch had first occurred. The percentage of participants’ choices favoring the happy, angry, or sad faces represented the selective attentional bias score for each emotion, respectively. For the RMT, participants rated different types of emotional faces and subsequently discriminated old faces from new faces. The memory strength for each type of face was calculated from hit and false-positive rates, based on the signal detection theory. Compared with the low-trait depressive group, the high-trait depressive group showed a negative cognitive style. This was an enhanced recognition memory for sad faces and a weakened inhibition of attending to sad faces, suggesting that those with high depressive trait may be vulnerable to interpersonal withdrawal

The objectives of the present study were: 1) To evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopy in the treatment of CCL of the TMJ; 2) To compare arthroscopic lysis & lavage versus operative arthroscopy in the treatment of CCL of the TMJ; 3) To evaluate whether or not the status of the joint surface and the synovial linning directly visualized with arthroscopy could determine post-operative results in patients with CCL of the TMJ. - Slides
